Sunscreen Culture Is Failing Us! Here’s What Your Body Actually Needs

I don’t know about you, but I am so excited to start working on my tan once the days begin to warm up. After months of hibernation, it feels so good to finally let those legs see the light of day! As we transition into longer, sunnier days and begin to shed the layer, literally and energetically, it’s important to do so with care and intention.
The sun is more than just warmth and glow. It’s a vital force of energy for our planet and for our bodies. It powers our gardens, lifts our moods, regulates our rhythms, and when used wisely, it can be a major player in our healing journey.

The Healing Light of the Sun
Let’s start with the basics: the sun’s light isn’t just about tanning. It plays a huge role in supporting our mood, hormones, and circadian rhythms which these three pillars can make or break our overall health.
In the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, the sun gives off a therapeutic glow rich in red and near-infrared light. These natural light frequencies help regulate our melatonin and cortisol production, telling the body, “It’s time to wake up,” or “It’s time to wind down.”
So, if you’re looking to boost your mood, sleep better, and align your body with nature’s rhythm, step outside during sunrise or sunset. Breathe it in. These gentle rays are your body’s cue for balance, calm, and restoration. Sungazing at these times is even safe for our eyes. In fact, this practice mirrors the grounding principles of halotherapy, where exposure to the right elements at the right time supports deep, cellular repair.
That Midday Sunshine? It’s Medicine.
While the early and late hours of light help regulate our rhythm, that midday sun is essential for something else: Vitamin D production.
Just 15–20 minutes of sun exposure on bare skin (think arms, legs, and even your torso if you can) can help your body synthesize this hormone naturally. Vitamin D supports everything from a resilient immune system to strong bones and balanced moods. It's nature’s way of fortifying us from the inside out.
One of my favorite ways to soak it in? Take a slow, mindful walk around the block or pause for a barefoot moment on the grass. Let the sun energize your cells while movement energizes your spirit.
How to Prime Your Skin for Safe Sun Sessions
When we practice consistent exposure, early morning, late evening, and a safe dose of midday light, we're gently prepping our skin and nervous system for longer summer sessions in the sun. You’re not only building your tan but also building resilience. Your body begins to trust that it’s safe to be in the light again.
The secret is in the way you expose yourself: gradually, lovingly, and with deep presence.
So, before you slather on the sunscreen or hide behind sunglasses all day, consider this: your body is designed to receive sunlight, to sync with it, and to heal through it. When you treat the sun as a healing ally (not something to fear) it becomes a powerful partner in your wellness journey.
Let this season be about more than just getting a tan. Let it be about receiving nourishment, resetting your rhythms, and remembering how good it feels to be in your own skin. Soak it in.
