Anxiety, Perimenopause, and Nervous System Healing: A New Way Through Nighttime Activation

When Anxiety Wakes You Up

One of my practice members recently shared an experience that beautifully captures what nervous system healing actually looks like in real life.

She woke up in the middle of the night with anxiety rising in her body. There was no clear trigger, no obvious thought pattern driving it...just a wave of activation moving through her system.

This is something many people experience, especially during seasons of physiological change. In her case, she is in perimenopause, where hormonal shifts, sleep disruptions, and increased nervous system sensitivity are very real and very impactful.

So, this wasn’t random. Her body was responding to internal changes.

But what made this experience powerful was not the anxiety itself.

It was how she met it.

The Old Pattern vs. The New Response

For many people, a moment like this can quickly turn into a spiral:

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Why is this happening?"

” How do I make this stop?”

The body tightens. The mind searches for answers. The nervous system escalates.

But this time, she did something different.

She recognized what was happening in her body.

Instead of resisting the sensation or trying to control it, she stayed with herself. She didn’t grip. She didn’t panic. She didn’t abandon her body in the moment it needed her most.

She used the tools she had practiced. She oriented to safety. She allowed the energy to move.

And most importantly, she trusted herself.

The Shift Into Embodied Power

Afterward, she shared something that stayed with me:

She felt empowered.

Not because the anxiety didn’t happen, but because she experienced herself differently inside of it.

She wasn’t at the mercy of her body. She wasn’t trying to override it. She was in relationship with it.

This is a completely different form of control than what most people are taught.

It’s not force. It’s not suppression. It’s not mental override.

It’s a grounded, embodied knowing: “I have the capacity to be with myself through this.”

That is real nervous system resilience.

Understanding Anxiety Through the Nervous System

Anxiety is not just something in your mind. It is a physiological state—a surge of activation in the nervous system.

During times like perimenopause, the body is navigating:

  • Hormonal fluctuations that impact mood and regulation

  • Changes in sleep cycles and recovery

  • Increased sensitivity to internal and external stressors

So, when anxiety arises, especially at night, it is often the body processing, releasing, or responding...not malfunctioning.

The goal is not to eliminate these responses entirely.

The goal is to change your relationship to them.

What Nervous System Retraining Actually Looks Like

Nervous system work is often misunderstood as “calming down” or “getting rid of anxiety.”

But in practice, it looks more like this:

  • Recognizing activation as it begins

  • Staying present in the body instead of disconnecting

  • Using tools that support regulation (breath, orientation, sensation awareness)

  • Allowing energy to move without bracing against it

  • Returning to a felt sense of safety over time

This is exactly what she did in that moment.

And this is why she walked away feeling different.

Because she didn’t just cope...she experienced a new pattern.

This Is the Work

Healing is not about never feeling anxiety again.

It’s about no longer feeling powerless when it arises.

It’s about building a relationship with your body where even in moments of activation, you know how to stay with yourself.

This is what creates lasting change.

This is how the nervous system learns safety.

This is the work we do inside ELAN.

And this is what it means to move from tension and reactivity into ease and embodied trust.

What if these moments aren’t interruptions, but invitations? Invitations to deepen your relationship with your body, to listen instead of resist, to soften instead of brace. The truth is, your body is not working against you... it's communicating, adapting, and seeking resolution. And when you learn how to meet it with presence, skill, and trust, even the most uncomfortable sensations become pathways back to yourself.

This is where true ease is built. Not in the absence of activation, but in your ability to stay connected within it.
